ACCURACY AND RELIABILITY

“ACCURACY AND RELIABILITY—The accurate, reliable and consistent results delivered by INTEQ’s Answers While DrillingSM services let you make the best decisions for well placement and maximum recovery.”

There are two metrics that determine precision.

One is the measurement of the greatest precision possible.

The other is what that precision makes possible.

A scenario of precision:

It’s a rich field. You first surveyed it in 1984. Your best cumulative production estimate is 1.9 billion barrels. But over the past 20 years, the economical viability of the field has been dubious. Technology has its limits.

It’s an offshore field in over 5,000 feet (1,600 meters) of water. It’s another 4.8 miles (7.7 kilometers) from the ocean floor to the reservoir—drilling horizontally virtually the entire distance, while steering through radical changes in horizontal azimuth. To fully expose a reservoir that extends over an area the size of Houston, Texas, you’d have to drill a single slot of 44,000 feet, with five horizontal legs and dozens of multilaterals. And for each well, you would then have to place your wells precisely in an extremely thin sand column with a thickness ranging from 25 to 90 feet (8 to 27 meters).

Technology has its limits. The directional drilling positioning capabilities required to take on these extremely long horizontal wells and multilaterals, sharp curves and an impossibly thin oil column did not exist. With traditional techniques and technology, this field was economically unviable.

With Answers While Drilling services, these wells were steered and positioned precisely 1.5 feet (50 centimeters) above the oil/water contact.

It was the Troll field off the coast of Norway. Today, it’s more than economically viable. Thanks to INTEQ Answers While Drilling tools, services and technologies, this rich field is producing today—and, with precisely placed wells throughout its entire range, will be producing for decades to come.

Answers While Drilling. High-accuracy rotary steerable, downhole motors and tightly integrated BHAs that permit directional changes with both azimuth and inclination control. Dynamic and interactive directional MWD that allow you to survey your downhole environment in real time, for on-the-spot drilling decisions, and advanced LWD for real-time formation evaluation during non-stop, long-arm horizontal drilling. Without these real-time answers, punching into a reservoir just a forearm’s breadth from the oil/water contact from five miles away would be impossible. With Answers While Drilling services, it can be accomplished—over and over.
